Transforming Lives

A medical crisis is more than a physical problem to the body. It can impact mental health, relationships and day to day activities. With the added stress of poverty, unaffordable medical expenses can be debilitating, driving individuals and families into debt, and leaving them feeling disheartened and powerless.

This is the case with 20-year-old Bijoy Pramanick from Kolkata, West Bengal. Bijoy’s mother, Lakshmi, works as a domestic helper and Bijoy’s father is a daily wage labourer. The family was struggling to make ends meet when tragedy struck. Bijoy was in a serious accident that resulted in significant injuries to his back. His doctor recommended surgery to ensure that Bijoy could walk again.

Given their limited income, the Pramanick family could not afford Bijoy’s treatment. Lakshmi  contacted Dwarika Memorial Charitable Trust for help. After hearing her plea, we provided them with monetary assistance.

Low-income families have difficulty accessing effective and equitable medical treatments. This is why the Dwarika Memorial Charitable Trust offers financial aid and emotional support as part of our healthcare initiatives. We are happy to report that after a successful surgery, Bijoy is on the mend.

From a Humble Hut to a Beautiful House

Rakesh Kumar is a hardworking farmer with a family of six. They live in an agricultural community in the heart of Saidpur, Bihar. While this area is endowed with fertile soil, producing rich and diverse crops, it is also prone to severe flooding. With these extreme weather patterns, plentiful bounties are not guaranteed. Small farmers, like Kumar, often experience financial instability.

Kumar’s struggles were not limited to an unsteady income. He was also faced with obstacles at home, as his house was in serious disrepair. Their rural brick hut did not have windows, no access to clean running water and had a failing roof. During the monsoon season, heavy rain caused severe damage that was expensive to fix.

Dwarika Memorial Charitable Trust was proud to provide financial support to Kumar and his family, enabling them to reconstruct their home. The new home has a better structure with a larger footprint, windows that have coverings, indoor plumbing with toilets and clean running water and a secure roof.

Dwarika Memorial Charitable Trust revitalizes communities by supporting affordable housing initiatives. By providing monetary assistance for the construction of housing, we are helping families like the Kumars build better lives.

Brightening the Festival of Lights for Domestic Workers

Diwali is the festival of lights. It is one of the biggest and most significant festivals of the year, a time to rejoice in the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. Diwali celebrations include prayer, feasts, fireworks, time spent with family and philanthropic giving.

On October 16, 2022, the Dwarika Memorial Charitable Trust celebrated Diwali by honouring women who are employed as domestic workers in Pune. The members of the Trust distributed 19 dry ration kits, boxes of candies and some home furnishing items to each worker. A two-month supply of flour, lentils, rice, spices, sugar, oil, and other cooking essentials was included in each ration kit.

Domestic workers are often undervalued despite their impact in the workforce. Because they are such an important part our daily lives, we were pleased to support them with gifts during the Diwali festival. May their lives be filled with love, light and happiness.

Energizing Life, Enriching Tomorrow

Dwarika Memorial Charitable Trust Distributes Dry Ration Kits

On June 25, 2022, Dwarika Memorial Charitable Trust distributed dry ration kits and saris to 21 women. The women who received these items are employed as domestic workers in Pune. They work in households where they clean, wash clothes and dishes, cook, and provide child and elderly care. The dry ration kits and saris we distributed will help these women and their families make ends meet. Each dry ration kit contained a 2-month supply of rice, spices, flour, lentils, sugar, oil and other cooking ingredients.

Dwarika Memorial Charitable Trust is committed to building a better future for India’s socially disadvantaged, economically challenged and systemically marginalized. Domestic workers are often undervalued despite their impact in the workforce. We were pleased to recognize these women and support them for their hard work.

More Memorable Visits to Local Orphanages

Dwarika Memorial Charitable Trust visits Sanmati Bal Niketan and Nirankar Balgram

Through a variety of initiatives, Dwarika Memorial Charitable Trust provides children and adolescents in underserved and under-resourced communities with access to educational and employment opportunities. As part of this mission, we visited two orphanages in June of 2022.

Our first visit was to Sanmati Bal Niketan, an orphanage based in Manjari, Pune. Sanmati Bal Niketan was founded in 1988 by Sou. Sindhutai Sapkal, an Indian social worker and activist. Sanmati Bal Niketan provides food, clothing, and shelter to orphans as well as women and the destitute. A major focus of their efforts is offering educational and rehabilitation programs to those they serve. Their facility features a computer room, a large hall for cultural activities, a solar energy system, a water filtration system, a library, and a study room.

Our second visit was to Nirankar Balgram, an orphanage based in Hadpasar, Pune. Founded in 2004 by Keshav Dhende, Nirankar Balgram provides children with shelter and education. After being orphaned at a young age, Keshav was inspired to help others going through a similar plight. He proves a loving and caring atmosphere for 20 children at his facility.

The children at these orphanages greeted us with smiles. We provided them with educational materials, snacks, blankets, pillows, mattresses, bed sheets, and toys like cricket sets, badminton sets, chess, and dolls. We spent time getting to know each child. We also engaged in group activities and played games together.

By supporting these organizations, we are helping individuals achieve their full potentials and become healthy, happy, responsible, and independent members of our community.

Memorable Visits to Two Local Orphanages

Dwarika Memorial Charitable Trust visits Jivhala Balsangopan and Saraswati Anath Siksham Ashram

Dwarika Charitiable Memorial Trust aims to build a better future for the socially disadvantaged, economically challenged and systemically marginalized. As part of our mission, we visited two orphanages in May of 2022. These were life-changing experiences filled with delightful moments.

Our first visit was to Jivhala Balsangopan, an orphanage based in Thergaon, Pune. Founded in 2011 by Mr. Vikas Patole, Jivhala provides housing, food, medical care and education for nine children. Patole’s goal is to “reach every corner of Maharashtra” to help those in need. He believes that by providing children with higher education, they will become future leaders of India.

Our second visit was to Saraswati Anath Siksham Ashram, an orphanage for boys based in Maharastra. Founded in 1995 by Mr. Devidas Laxman Survase, the Ashram provides young boys with shelter and education. After being orphaned at a young age, Survase was inspired to help others going through a similar plight. He proves a loving and caring atmosphere for 40 children at his facility.

The children at these orphanages greeted us with smiles. We provided them with snacks, blankets, pillows, mattresses, bed sheets, and toys like cricket sets, badminton sets, chess, dolls, etc. We spent time getting to know each child. We also engaged in group activities and played games.

At Dwarika, we believe in enriching the lives of underprivileged children in our community. Through engagement and donations, we can help provide them with a better future.

Dwarika Trust Supporting Students in 2022

A core mission of the Dwarika Memorial Charitable Trust is to support underprivileged students in India. During the 2022 school year, we are providing financial aid to 18 students, ages 4 to 19.

We believe that the foundation for our future begins with educating the youngest members of our community. This is why we are supporting 15 students who attend elementary schools. We are also supporting three extraordinary young adults as they begin their higher education studies.

With this support, we are helping India’s youth realize their maximum potentials and become the change-makers of the future.
